La Coupure. Canada 2006.

For the first time ever on the web, here is La Coupure (Torn Apart). Discs of this film are absolutely unobtainable even secondhand. How did I manage to find one secondhand? By trying everywhere constantly for months till one turned up in Quebec and I snapped it up quick before it vanished. It was not cheap, but you all get the benefit. There is no infringement of copyright in posting this film. It is not on sale and probably won't ever be again.

I saw La Coupure recently at the Denver Film Festival and thought it was a very good film. Well acted and written with a story I had not seen before. The director was there and spoke very well. He said that he was intrigued by the painful situations that incestuous relationships cause after reading a book by a psychologist who had several such patients. He said that he has since spoken with several people in such relationships, including those that have come up to him after screenings and telling him about their lives. He asked the audience before the screening to be open minded. He felt that many people in their lives have loved the wrong people yet been unable to break up the relationship and he hoped that viewers could relate to the film on that level. I feel that he succeeded in presenting a difficult subject matter in a sympathetic light.

Two people are caught up in an all-consuming and forbidden love in this drama, the first feature from director Jean Chateuvert. Christine (Valerie Cantin) is married to Mario (Michael Kelly), a successful businessman, and is the mother of two children. However, Christine has a lover, a man she's known long before she was married -- her brother Christophe (Marc Marans). Both Christine and Christophe are aware of the dangers of their incestuous relationship, and have both attempted to stop it -- Christophe even introduced Mario to his sister in hopes that they would hit it off and their affair would come to a end. But neither Christine nor Christophe have the strength to put an end to their relationship, and while Mario has recently earned a promotion at work that will necessitate moving to a new city (a job Christine urged him to get), she hasn't had the courage to tell her brother the news.
